Korea Downtown Tax Refund and Airport Tax Refund Counters 2026
You don't have to wait for the airport to get your Korean tax refund: purchases of up to ₩6,000,000 can be refunded in downtown Seoul first. Based on Korea Tourism Organization data, this page lists each airport's refund counter location, hours and payout currencies.

The instant-refund thresholds and the route at Incheon T1 are already covered in Korea Shopping Tax Refund Step by Step. This page adds just three things: getting your refund in downtown Seoul first, where the counters are at airports other than Incheon T1, and getting VAT back on accommodation. Data comes from the Korea Tourism Organization's Comprehensive Tax Refund Guide, verified October 31, 2026; on-site information takes precedence.
Downtown refunds: get your money in Seoul before you fly
- Requirements: purchase of ₩15,000 or more, up to ₩6,000,000 per receipt.
- How it works:
- 1. Shop at a tax-free store and keep the refund receipt;
- 2. Take your passport, refund receipt and credit card to a staffed downtown refund point or a self-service kiosk;
- 3. When you leave Korea, you still show the goods, refund receipt and passport to customs to confirm export.
- Reminder: even though you got the money downtown, you still can't skip the departure confirmation.

Accommodation tax refunds
If you stay at a participating accommodation and the room rate includes VAT, individual travelers can get a refund on up to 30 nights; breakfast counts too if it's included in the room rate. Nights beyond 30, separately paid breakfast and service charges aren't refunded, and tour-group travelers aren't eligible. You must also leave Korea within 3 months of check-in.
Who's eligible
- Foreigners staying in Korea for no more than 6 months;
- Overseas Koreans who have lived abroad for 2 years or more and are staying in Korea for no more than 3 months.
Not eligible: long-term residents (6 months or more), diplomats in Korea, U.S. Forces Korea personnel, people employed in Korea, and purchases made in a company's name or on someone else's behalf.
On-site conditions and official announcements always take precedence.

- Duty free vs tax refund — Duty-free prices already exclude VAT and individual consumption tax; department stores charge tax-inclusive prices and refund the tax before you leave (from ₩15,000). Downtown duty-free goods are collected only at the departure pickup counter. Plus Korea's official allowance and purchase-limit rules.
- Tax refund with discounts — Coupons and payment discounts lower the price the VAT refund is based on, and the refund you actually get is less than 10% because operator fees are deducted. Plus the 2026 instant-refund limits, the minimum purchase and refunds to Alipay, WeChat Pay or card.
- Department store hours — Weekday and weekend hours, restaurant floor hours and November 2026 closing days for Lotte Main, Shinsegae Main and Gangnam, The Hyundai Seoul, Hyundai Apgujeong and Galleria Luxury Hall, plus Lunar New Year and Chuseok closures and downtown duty-free hours.
